Assistant Horticulturist (Crew Lead)
EcoGardens LLC is a woman- and latin-owned company based in Philadelphia. We take care of residential gardens in Northwest Philly (Germantown, Mt. Airy, Chestnut Hill) but we are not limited to that area and have clients all over the Greater Philadelphia region. We follow the 2/3 native rule, meaning, 2/3 of the plants in our gardens should be North American native plants. The other 1/3 could be plants such as roses, vines, shrubs, and vegetables/fruits. We are a small crew of 4 people with camaraderie.
Position details:
$22-$28.00/hour, based on experience
4-5 days a week, 6-7 hour days, Mon- Fri
Position runs from late March through December
Your own transportation is highly encouraged but not necessary (this position gets personal access to truck)
Hours are flexible but generally 8:30am-3:00pm, w/ a flexible lunch break
Requirements:
Minimum of 1 full gardening/farming season
Teach and demonstrate tasks to others less knowledgeable
Lead a crew and talk to clients
Identify common weeds, perennials, and trees
Enjoy being outdoors in all weather conditions
Able to bend, sit, and kneel for extended periods of time
Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds
Valid Driver’s License
Job Tasks:
Plan out daily gardening tasks based on the needs of the garden and make sure they get done in an efficient manner (weeding, pruning, dead-heading, watering, etc.)
Be able to identify problems in the garden and come up with solutions in a team
Oversee and manage the planting of annuals, perennials, small shrubs/trees, vegetables, herbs and bulbs
Help gardeners clean up the job site, make sure it gets done properly, and on-time
Make judgement calls based on timing, equipment, and labor size
Drive trucks safely to the job site, fuel up, and maintain a work truck
Work closely with the company owner to deliver a good service to our clients

The ideal candidate should be interested in traditional horticulture practices, fine gardening, and outdoor leadership. An interest in soil health, plant-pollinator interactions, and healthy wildlife habitats would be a great quality for this job.
